Aquila Safaris

SOUTH AFRICAN SAFARIS AND AQUILA GAME RESERVE

Aquila Game Reserve is located 2 hours away from Cape Town making it the ideal day trip safari destination for travellers visiting Cape Town. Aquila hosts a wide range of exciting activities such as: day trips, quad biking adventures, bushman painting expeditions, horse back safaris and safari game drives. Aquila is a 4 star establishment located in a malaria-free game reserve…

Aquila was named after the black eagle that inhabits the area providing spectacular photo opportunities for enthusiastic bird watchers. Aquila covers a massive 4500 ha of lush Southern Karoo vegetation that provides the optimal habitat for re-located and rehabilitated animals to roam. Located in the reserve are also a cheetah and a separate lion enclosure. Aquila is well known for its lion population; lions and lion cubs found in Aquila were all rescued from the ‘canned lion’ destiny.

Aquila not only educates all its visitors about wildlife and conservation but the organisation is also actively involved in community upliftment projects. Aquila has successfully started the Touwsriver community project which supports the nearby community by educating locals and providing soup kitchens to feed the hungry. They also offer a recycling program that allows the Touwsriver people to become involved in a socially responsible program while protecting their environment and earning valuable money.

Aquila was declared a nature reserve in 1985 and boasts a wide variety of animals including the big five (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant), 172 different species of bird, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, black eagles and flamingos. There are 3 biomes in the Aquila Game Reserve; fynbos, renosterveldt and the succulent Karoo. It is also situated on flower route which means that if travellers are interested in experiencing the flower carpets that cover this part of the Cape in spring, the optimal time to travel would be between July and September. Near the Aquila Game Reserve travellers can visit the surrounding areas that offer trout fishing, wine routes and tours, golfing and botanical garden tours.

If you are looking for a short safari experience, Aquila is the perfect place to visit. (we also offer a day trip that allows you to see most of the animals in a short amount of time), Aquila boasts some fantastic options that one can enjoy, such as; game drives, day trips, bushman painting viewings, mountain biking and hiking.

The best time to visit Aquila would be in the summer months either early in the morning or later at night when the temperatures are cooler for the animals. Cape Town has a temperate climate.
