Mahango National Park and Namibia Safaris

NAMIBIA SAFARIS AND THE MAHANGO NATIONAL PARK:
There are four main reserves located in the Caprivi Strip; the Mudumu, the Mamili, the Mahango and the Bwabwata (formally known as the West Caprivi Game Park). The Mahango National Park (sometimes spelt Mahangu), and Game Reserve is located on the western side of the Caprivi and provides a great stopover when travelling between Namibia and Botswana. Mahango was proclaimed a National Park in 1989 – with the focus being on conservation of the buffalos of Namibia.
The focal point in the Mahango National Park is the Okavango River; one can see magnificent animals resting near this Namibian water source. The Okavango River is filled with crocodiles and hippos and in the dry season the river banks are populated with elephants. There is also an amazing abundance of birdlife in the Mahango Game Reserve with over 400 different bird species having been recorded there. Other animals that frequent Mahango include; red lechwe, sable, antelope, water buffalo, reedbuck, bushbuck, waterbuck, duck, geese and herons.
The Mahango National Park’s landscape consists of dry woodlands and lush riverine vegetation with a few baobabs scattered near the riverbanks of the Okavango River. The Mahango area is split up into two main routes; the eastern route and the western route. The eastern route is the better option for this Namibian National park as the roads are better to drive on (better gravel); it also overlooks flood plains and has a few nice picnic areas. The Mahango National Park is located 12 km away from the Popa Falls, making a combination safari a must.
The best time to visit the Mahango National Park is in the dry season (between July and October). The summer months coupled with the summer rains (between November and April) provide little game sightings however, the bird sightings are great all year round! Bush walks and game drives are highly recommended for an exciting Namibian safari. Wildlife is regarded as elusive due to the thick vegetation … but, with the increase of wildlife populations in this National Park over the last few years, the sightings of these African animals have increased too!
